Telenor is replacing its existing delivery infrastructure with Broadpeak’s unified, scalable Advanced CDN to deliver video streaming services to subscribers across the Nordics and Asia.

Broadpeak telenor DNA

Telenor's DNA service operates across Finland

Worldwide telecommunications company Telenor delivers video streaming services across the Nordics and Asia. Telenor operates localised brands such as Telenor T-We, Telenor Stream and DNA throughout Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland, as well as across Pakistan and Bangladesh. Telenor’s subscribers gain access to hundreds of linear channels, live sports and entertainment series via connected TV devices, web and mobile applications.

Telenor has partnered with Broadpeak to replace its existing content delivery network (CDN) infrastructure and deploy a unified, scalable CDN system. This new up-to-date platform will enhance the streaming experience on millions of customer devices across the Nordics, including both Telenor’s internal customers and third-party customer devices.

Network Optimisation

Running on Broadpeak’s streaming platform, Telenor will deliver live TV, catch up, start over, personal video recorder (PVR) and VOD services directly to Telenor Nordics’ end-users as well as making a CDN available as a service (CDNaaS) to third party streaming services. High performance video streaming and Advanced CDN solutions from Broadpeak will maintain consistent broadcast-grade quality across traffic peaks, and add a new element of efficiency by using the same core delivery platform across all its Nordic markets.

Internet traffic is not only growing but also changing rapidly and becoming more complex due to, for example, migration from broadcast to Adaptive Bitrate streaming, the emergence of new quality standards and adoption of energy-efficiency policies. Emil Hansen, VP Nordic TV at Telenor, commented, “Broadpeak has substantial experience in delivering quality at scale and knows how to handle complex service migration challenges. We have the unified management we need to grow our services efficiently.”

Broadpeak’s expertise in deploying large scale network optimization, and its varied video streaming solutions are allowing Telenor to build a unified high-performance CDN, with mutualized access architecture to networks and multiple points of presence (PoPs) across Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Multiple CDN Services through a Single Platform

The Broadpeak Advanced CDN was developed for high performance video delivery. Its open, dynamic, elastic nature means that, over time, Telenor can optimize costs and enhance energy efficiency within its distribution system to deliver any content, to any screen across any network, through a single platform. Its edge-computing features bring video streaming closer to end-users to optimize the delivery of content.

Broadpeak CDN Security AntiPiracy

It can also create opportunities for new business models, building a bridge between ISPs and content providers through the use of Open Caching APIs. The Open Caching specification defines an interoperable network of caches for content delivery. This network consists of an open caching node representing a compliant caching server, a request router handling inbound requests for content and a control plane for communications related to configuration.

With support for over 1Tbps per server, Telenor is able to stream video to large audiences while keeping control of viewing quality and reliability during peak events. The single-interface design simplifies management and operations, and increases visibility and efficiency.

Broadpeak CDN News Coming to IBC 2025

Broadpeak will launch a new anti-piracy solution at IBC 2025 to help combat revenue loss and piracy during large-scale streaming events. It reinforces Broadpeak’s CDN with anti-piracy capabilities purpose-built for video as an alternative to generic or self-built CDN security features. The multi-layered protection combines token validation, scalable DDoS protection and new types of anti-token-sharing with system-level intelligence to protect high numbers of streams during peak live events.

Operating at both the system and video levels (see diagram), Broadpeak blocks threats including credential sharing, scraping, unauthorized access and token abuse before they impact operations. This contrasts with general-purpose CDN services that may lack visibility into unwelcome behaviour unique to video streaming, or with in-house systems that only act locally and omit a global system view. Integrated into Broadpeak’s CDN, natively designed to deliver high-audience streaming events, the service can scale during traffic peaks to address use cases in live sports and entertainment.

Broadpeak’s anti-piracy is available as an additional service within its CDN, whether deployed on-prem or via Broadpeak’s CDNaaS offering, and can be delivered as a managed service. The system integrates within users’ wider security features, ranging from web protection and digital rights management to security information and event management (SIEM) systems. broadpeak.tv
