GlobalM integrated its GMX software-defined media platform with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, supporting live, automated media contribution, processing and distribution across regions.
GlobalM is integrating its GMX software-defined media platform with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in order to support live media contribution, processing and distribution. The integration will enable GMX Cloud services to run across OCI regions, which gives broadcasters, sports organisations and media companies access to a much more extensive global footprint for live media workflows.
The integration mainly concerns automation. GMX effectively creates a software-defined media network on OCI, automatically deploying the compute, networking, media processing and routing resources required for each service. Infrastructure is launched and configured on demand, point-to-multipoint (one-to-many) contribution and distribution paths are established automatically, and resources can be scaled as requirements change before being automatically released when services finish.
Dynamic OCI Cloud Scheduling
This functionality means broadcasters can schedule and consume OCI infrastructure dynamically without having to manually build and configure the underlying cloud environment for each production. Transcoding and remuxing are also applied automatically for content compatibility across platforms, and automated orchestration simplifies cloud resource management via GlobalM’s Cloud network management system (NMS).
GlobalM finds that OCI is particularly well-suited to professional broadcast applications because of its high-performance networking and flexible compute architecture. Users allocate resources – number of OCPUs (physical Oracle CPU cores), amount of memory and other factors – they will need to an OCI instance via templates called shapes.
Further refining this idea, OCI’s Flexible Shapes allow compute and memory resources to be configured according to individual workload requirements, which enables GMX to optimise infrastructure for applications ranging from SRT and RIST transport protocol gateways to transcoding, remultiplexing and high-throughput media distribution.
GlobalM supports SRT, RIST, and RTMP-compliant encoders and decoders, and an integrated SRT mobile app for iOS.
Global Footprint for Distributed Architecture
Oracle’s global cloud footprint also complements GlobalM’s distributed architecture. GMX processing and routing nodes can be automatically deployed across OCI locations, allowing contribution feeds to enter the cloud close to their source and receiving broadcasters to connect through infrastructure close to their destination. This feature helps keep the unmanaged first and last miles as short as practical while the core media workflow operates across managed cloud infrastructure.
The collaboration will extend GlobalM’s hybrid capabilities as well. GMX1 processing and routing nodes, which are gateway appliances for high-density, rack-mounted applications within core network environments, deployed at customer facilities will be able to operate alongside GMX Cloud resources running on OCI. Combined with Oracle’s hybrid cloud capabilities, broadcasters can integrate existing facilities with dynamically deployed cloud processing, international distribution, additional capacity, redundancy and disaster recovery.
Complete Cloud MCR
