OTT service provider 1001 chose Bitmovin Player to improve video streaming performance and increase reliability and consistency across devices, and in turn improve the viewing experience.

1001 is one of Iraq’s main video streaming platforms, making a huge library of hyper-localized and international content available that suits the needs, expectations and preferences of diverse audiences. Now a recognised OTT service, 1001 focusses on exclusive movies, TV series, live sports and international programming, placing it in a good position as a source of high-quality and localized video content in Iraq.

1001’s continuous challenge concerns modernising its OTT service and taking greater ownership of its technology stack. Looking for a high-performance, flexible player for its viewers that would deliver strong, consistent AV quality across devices, the company selected the Bitmovin Player. Its software would also give its engineering teams the control needed to iterate quickly and experiment confidently.

Bilal Alghazi, VP Engineering, 1001, said, “Since deploying the Bitmovin Player, we’ve seen clear improvements in playback reliability, the startup routine and overall application stability. The consistency of Bitmovin’s SDKs across platforms has simplified development and reduced the complexity related to specific platforms, helping us to generate faster releases and more predictable user experiences. Furthermore, through the player’s level of configurability and analytics, Bitmovin has given us deeper visibility and control over playback quality than we had before.”

The Player’s video quality settings are configurable, including the ABR which can be adapted to fit specific needs, and the ad macros may also be configured to suit specific purposes. Bitmovin has a number of Analytics Partners as well, including Conviva, Akamai Analytics, NPAW and others, whose tools can be integrated into the Player.

AI Scene Analysis is a major Bitmovin capability, integrated directly into its VOD Encoder. It runs automatically during encoding, capturing scene-level context in real time. By analysing visual, audio and verbal elements along the timeline, it generates metadata to use in workflows that are closer to the viewer, such as dynamic ad insertion, highlight creation and personalised recommendations. For instance, it can automate ad scheduling by detecting transitions and accurately inserting SCTE markers, and identify critical moments to simplify highlight reel or trailer compilation.

These tasks normally require lengthy manual tagging – automating that work speeds up development of more relevant experiences and new types of monetisation for users.

As well as adopting the Bitmovin Player, 1001 is using Bitmovin’s Observability tool to gain deeper visibility and control over playback quality. As it monitors the Player, it identifies quality, monetisation and performance issues in real time, using such mechanisms as session analysis, stack traces and player event logs. It then generates alerts for the user and acts quickly to resolve problems and keep impact on viewing to a minimum.

Bitmovin’s CEO and Co-Founder Stefan Lederer said, “1001 is a thriving video service that is committed to its viewers’ quality of experience. The Bitmovin Player enhances the company’s video streaming capabilities, playback and observability.” www.bitmovin.com
