Matrox Monarch EDGE Encodes H.264 Web and Remote Production

Matrox Monarch EDGE, a low-latency H.264 encoder for webcasting and remote integration (REMI) applications, can adapt to many workflows. Monarch EDGE is capable of delivering resolutions up to 3840x2160p60, or four times 1920x1080p60, for 4:2:2 10-bit, broadcast-quality video. To handle future productions, this new encoder also supports 3G/12G-SDI and SMPTE ST 2110 over 25 GbE connectivity, plus diverse multiple-protocol support including RTMP, SRT, MPEG-2 and RTSP.

Monarch EDGE was developed for video producers, system integrators and broadcasting organisations who must now address requirements in new, emerging and existing webcasting, REMI and high-density contribution workflows. For example, broadcasters can use Monarch EDGE's robust, low-latency, dynamic H.264 encoding to take advantage of their existing over-the-top (OTT) services to deliver specialised web content.

Users can expand their reach beyond traditional linear programming by using up to date webcasting developments available on the device, such as high-frame rate (HFR) 4K, 4K 360 VR and multi-camera selection, to stream distinctive live content to laptops and desktops, smartphones, tablets and smart TVs.

Remote Integration Sports Production

An important application for Monarch EDGE right now is producing live, multi-camera sporting events, while lowering on-site expenses by keeping talent in their studio. A compact, low-latency, low-power remote production encoder, Monarch EDGE delivers synchronized, secure remote camera feeds to a master control room or to the cloud for production. Programs intended for web or OTT delivery can use the Monarch EDGE 4:2:0 8-bit model, and the 4:2:2 10-bit-capable version is a good match for productions that need broadcast quality.

High-density contribution

The contribution- or mezzanine-level encoding capabilities of Monarch EDGE give broadcasters a means to add complementary backhaul feeds or redundant contribution channels to their primary feeds. This appliance, with a small-footprint and low power requirements, delivers four channels of 4:2:2 10-bit, broadcast-quality streams.

Monarch EDGE also has enough encoding power to generate simultaneous low-bitrate 4:2:0 proxy streams for each input, which can be monitored by any device on the network. Allowing up to four simultaneous input previews on a single desktop monitor, the DP output of the Monarch Edge can be used to check that videos are valid and ready to use. Users can configure previewing of input sources, choosing to view one input, cycle through inputs, or view four inputs simultaneously.  www.matrox.com/video
