Nevion extends the signal processing capabilities of its software-defined Virtuoso with a new audio interface, frame rate conversion and 3D LUTs for in- and outside live production.

Nevion virtuoso

Nevion has extended the signal processing capabilities of its software-defined media node Virtuoso with a new audio interface and further up/down/cross conversion (UDC) functionality. These capabilities increase the versatility of Virtuoso for live production applications, such as outside broadcast or centralised processing (‘glue’) infrastructure for studio, production control room or master control room operations. Virtuoso can serve as interfacing that connects different protocols and systems together, making it possible to process, distribute, convert or analyse varied types of video and audio signals.

Virtuoso has been widely deployed to transport, process and monitor signals in real-time, and is also a major component of Sony’s Networked Live system. In particular, the video and audio processing capabilities of Virtuoso are in everyday use in broadcast facilities to support national and regional radio and TV productions.

Virtuoso already has fairly broad audio capabilities, including bidirectional AES3, MADI and SMPTE ST 2110 / AES67 IP audio interfacing. Processing features include monitoring, routing, embedding, mixing, shuffling and per-channel control of polarity, gain and delay. With a new interface (RPRO) aimed at remote production applications, Virtuoso can now also interface and transport mixed digital and analogue audio signals, along with GPIO (general-purpose input/output) and sync distribution.

For video processing, Virtuoso’s UDC capability carries out format conversions at high-quality for HD and UHD with native SMPTE ST 2110-20 uncompressed video input/output. The existing functionality includes de-interlacing, scaling, HDR/SDR conversion, legalisation, frame synchronisation and delay. Among the new UDC capabilities are frame rate conversion and configurable 3D LUTs for colour space conversion. A subset of BBC’s 3D LUTs come pre-loaded.

The latest Virtuoso media function release also includes a further enhancement to the JPEG-XS in TS (TR-07) capability announced at NAB 2023, adding the ability to handle IP-in/IP-out workflows. JPEG-XS over TS supports visually lossless and ultra-low latency transport of HD and UHD signals, while maintaining synchronisation of video and audio streams.

Steve Hard, VP of Product Management, Virtuoso at Nevion said, “Known for its media transport functionality, Nevion Virtuoso also has many media processing capabilities, making Virtuoso an extremely versatile media node. These new extensions to the media processing capabilities of Virtuoso confirm its position as one of the highest performers for in-facility and outside broadcast applications.” nevion.com

Nevion’s Virtuoso will be on show at the NABShow (Las Vegas, 14-17 April, 2024), in the Networked Live area of Sony’s stand C8201.
